Deuteronomy 1:30-33
The Lord your God who goes before you will Himself fight on your behalf, just as He did for you in Egypt before your eyes, and in the wilderness. There you saw how the LORD your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.”
In spite of this, you did not trust in the LORD your God, who went ahead of you on your journey, in fire by night and in a cloud by day, to search out places for you to camp and to show you the way you should go.
Why does Jesus say follow me?
Picture yourself blindfolded.
If no one guides you, you are going to run into everything.
If someone guides you from behind, the possibility of collision into things from the front that go unnoticed by the person guiding you from the back still induces fear.
Similarly, with someone guiding you from the side, you aren't sure if you will collide with things towards your emptier side since it’s a blind spot for the guide.
However, there is absolutely no fear in walking forward if the guide is walking in front of you.
Why? The guide will first face any obstacle. He is walking exactly in front of you so there is no reason to be afraid of things getting in your way because Jesus is facing and overcoming them first. And we know Jesus is our best friend!
What blessed assurance! What living hope we have in our Lord Jesus. Follow Him and He will set our paths straight!
In the same way He overcame death and ascended to heaven, anyone who follows behind Him, is sure to have that victory and eternal life in heaven!
Deuteronomy 31:8
The Lord is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
Matthew 16:24
Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
John 8:12
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
”I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
